2026 Breeding plans
2026 goat breeding plans
6/11/20262 min read

With kidding season behind us and breeding season quickly approaching (August,) we've finalized our planned pairings for the upcoming year.
Our goals remain simple: healthy, productive dairy goats with sound structure, excellent milk production, and the great milk our family has come to love.
This year we will be utilizing synchronized breedings and hand breeding to help maintain a more predictable kidding schedule and allow for more accurate breeding records and expected, planned kidding dates. Maude, Broadway, and Hazel are Nubians, Nugget is Nigerian Dwarf, and the rest are American Oberhasli. Info on all our goats can be found here.

* young does will only be bred if they meet our minimum standards for size, weight, and maturity. Nugget will be used for all first time does to encourage moderate birth weights and reduce the risk of oversized single kids in first fresheners
Our kidding season is planned to begin in early January and continue through mid-February. By staggering breedings, we hope to spread kiddings over several weeks, allowing us to focus more attention on each doe and her kids.
As always, breeding plans are just that, plans. Goats occasionally have ideas of their own, and pairings may change if circumstances require. We generally like winter kidding, there's lower coccidia risk, lower fly pressure, and cooler weather. Plus outside work is at a minimum leaving us with more time to spend on care.
We did have an unplanned split season this last kidding season. It did go ok and we had planned on more purposefully repeating that to get a better feel with more does included. However, due to the screwworm being in the US and not knowing where it will pop up next, or when, we will be maintaining winter only kidding this year and in subsequent years until it is eradicated again. Screwworms will lay eggs in any open wound, newborn navels, a recently birthed doe's genital area, disbudding sites, possibly tattoo sites. It is just safer for the moment to plan kidding for the cool season when fly pressure is lowest to non existent and we have more time to really watch them all closely. We are planning on having all January to mid February kids for the 2027 season.
Any doe that doesn't settle, doesn't meet weight requirements, or is otherwise not ready will be carried over to next season in order to avoid kidding during fly season.
We'll continue posting updates throughout breeding season, pregnancy confirmations, and eventually kidding announcements as we move toward another exciting year at Loki Farms.
Thank you to everyone who has followed along with our herd's growth. We are excited to see what the next generation brings.
